The expressions on their faces had been interesting, when he'd tendered his resignation. Shock, disbelief, it was good to know you'd be missed when you suddenly face someone with the fact of your imminent departure. Truth be told, Hobbie, along with everyone else around him, had always figured he'd die in the service and that resigning wasn't even on the horizon.

Somehow, they'd talked him out of it. Well, not entirely. He was still leaving and he wouldn't be on active duty, but somehow they were keeping him on the payroll. Something about being the Republic's only representative on the not very important, hence no embassy, planet of Terra. Hobbie didn't argue.

The only hard part about saying goodbye to those he knew were having to do so to the people he just knew were thinking, he's never been the same since Janson-... At least he didn't get that from Wedge and Tycho. They only gave him looks full of unasked questions as they embraced him and pressed gifts on him (ryshcate in Wedge's case and a nice bottle of Whyren's in Tycho's) and extracted promises that Hobbie would comm them from time to time and keep up. Or they'd fly out to Terra and check on him personally. With Iella and Winter in tow. He'd laughed a little and agreed to their demands, calling them 'a bunch of mother hens'.

Hobbie even managed to send a message ahead of himself to Wes with his estimated day of arrival. He'd left out location and time though, figuring he'd just actually call when he arrived. Or at some point that day, since he managed to find himself instead wandering around town wondering what the hell he was going to do with himself now.

He'd figure something out, lest Wes do the figuring out for him.

A lot of things have changed for Wes since he originally ended up on Earth. Some of them where little things, and some of them were pretty damn big, but there were other things that hadn't changed at all. One of those things was his ability to be patient when it didn't involve either life and death, or his job. Since he didn't have a job anymore, and he was pretty sure this wasn't a life or death situation, he finally got tired of waiting for another message from Hobbie and called him instead.

Not that he was overly excited about seeing him or anything. Besides, he owed Hobbie a Flaming Orgasm, and he couldn't very well pay up without seeing him now could he?

Ring, Ring!

Only when the beeping started did it occur to Hobbie that maybe he should've called Wes again by now. Shaking his head at himself, Hobbie answers.

"So I ran into a little traffic around Corellia and it's looking like I might be a while...I'm thinking I might just stop in and go pick up girls in bars instead."

No, he's not allowed to answer like a normal human being.

Wes is obviously amused if the tone of his voice is any indication at all. "So you're saying I should be expecting you with at least one, but more likely two bright red cheeks when you finally make it out here then?"

Which is good, because normal is so very boring.

From: [identity profile]
"It's a distinct possibility," he agrees.

"Oh wait, traffic cleared up, I'm in town already. Oops?"

Date: 2009-07-29 01:32 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
He's still amused, possibly even more so, and he doesn't sound the least bit surprised. "Wow, traffic around there clears up a lot faster than I remember. Where are you?"

Hobbie rattles off the streetcorner he's nearest. "I've been seeing the sights and I was just thinking about getting a drink..."

Yes, he let that hang out there with a very implied I think you said something about buying one for me but Force I hope it's not anything embarrassing.

Wes takes note of the streets and realizes it shouldn't take him all that long to get there if he speeds, and he rarely does anything but that anyway. "There's a cantina about a block west of your current position as I recall. I can meet you there in about twenty minutes, give or take."

"They only have cantinas in Mexico here, Wes," Hobbie grinned but started heading in that direction. "I'll save you a seat."

From: [identity profile]
Wes snorts softly. "Bar, cantina, it all means the same thing. Alcohol. I'll see you in a few."

Wes hangs up, already on his way before he's even pushed the button to end the call. It's not long before he's looking for a parking spot near the bar, which takes almost as long as getting there did in the first place. Eventually though he does manage, and makes his way into the bar.

Hobbie is, indeed, already sitting a high table, a glass of water and a bowl of nuts in front of him.

Look at him, good enough to wait for Wes to show up before starting in on the alcohol. He smiles when he catches sight of Wes, "Hey."

Wes grins as he heads over and sits down in the chair opposite of Hobbie. It's been way to long since he's had the chance to see him face to face. "Hey, yourself."

He cocks his head slightly as he looks his friend over. "You look good. Different, but good. Been getting some sun or something?"

Date: 2009-07-29 03:45 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
"Oh yeah," he says, tipping his head to the side, "I took a vacation at the beach for a few months. I mean. No? I don't think I've done anything different."

And Wes, of course, looked amazing. Mostly because he was actually alive and that still was an amazing thing as far as Hobbie was concerned.

From: [identity profile]
"Maybe it's just been too long. I mean, we haven't had a lot of chances to see each other for the past...well, couple years. You've been working and I've's just been a while."

Wes smiles a bit at the waitress as she comes over, glad for the moment for the distraction. "We'll take two Flaming Orgasms, please."

What, you didn't think he was going to forget did you?

Date: 2009-07-29 10:18 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
Hobbie groaned and quite theatrically let his forehead thump down onto the table. "I'd hoped you'd forgotten. There's absolutely nothing wrong with a simple beer, y'know."

But it was Wes and...he didn't actually mind at all.

Date: 2009-07-30 12:38 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
Wes wonders if that hurt at all, but assumes that Hobbie's probably had more than enough practice doing it so that it doesn't. "Well it is a simple beer, more or less. It just has a bit of flaming rum added for amusement factor is all."

Date: 2009-07-30 04:52 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
"Oh," he says as he sits up. "I was worried there be little paper umbrellas or fruit or something."

And really, if you were going to drink, why put anything healthy in it?

Date: 2009-07-30 05:09 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
That earns Hobbie a slow, lopsided smile. "Well then, I guess it's a good thing I didn't go for the Long Slow Comfortable Screw Against the Wall."

Date: 2009-07-30 01:18 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
That was terrible. Kriffing suggestive drink names.

So if Hobbie colored a little bit, at least it was dim in the bar.

"Yeah," he says, "because that's not our sort of drink at all." Which probably works on more than one level. "We're more about a Green Cookie Monster, I think."

Date: 2009-07-30 11:39 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
Wes racks his brain for a moment, but he can't for the life of him recall a drink by that name. Of course that's probably because it wasn't suggestive enough, but still!

"A Green Cookie Monster?"

Date: 2009-07-30 11:43 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
Hobbie nods extra-seriously. "A little goofy, a little burny. It's a shot of rum, vodka, and some kind of fruit liqueur. Bartender somewhere made it up." While Hobbie was sort of perpetually drunk on Terra after Wes died.

[it's just something I found on but...*shrug!* Hobbie says this is what it really is.]

From: [identity profile]
"Sounds interesting. You'll have to buy one for me so I can make sure it lives up to our reputation."

Because really, if it was more about them, then it had a lot to live up to when all was said and done.

[works for us!]

From: [identity profile]
"I'll even buy one for each of us."

And, well, a Long Slow, Comfortable Screw Against the Wall definitely wasn't about them. Not in this life. So anything had to be closer, right?

[I've mentioned Loki is a pushy bastard, right? Oops.]

"Well aren't you a big spender."

His voice has that hint of perpetual amusement that had almost always been there before things had gone wrong.

From: [identity profile]
"Aren't I just?" he asked with a grin.

And hey look, there's the girl with their drinks!

From: [identity profile]
She sets the glasses on the table, then sets the rum in the shotglasses on fire before dropping them in the mugs of beer, setting the top of that on fire as well.

Wes grins at Hobbie. "I love the interactive stuff."

He then blows the fire out and slams back the whole thing as quickly as he can manage. Which these days, is pretty damn quick given all the practice he's had over the past year or so.

Date: 2009-08-11 11:52 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
Hobbie raised his eyebrows at that display but judiciously didn't comment.

Well, not until after he blew the fire out on his own drink and swallowed it down, anyway.

"Mmm, flamey."

From: [identity profile]
Wes chuckles and motions the waitress to bring them something a bit less theatrical. Then he takes a moment to look at Hobbie before lifting an eyebrow a bit. "So, how are things back home?"

Home of course being the gffa.

From: [identity profile]
Hobbie shrugged a little, "everyone," everyone being, of course, anyone who mattered. Basically Tycho and Wedge and a few others. "Were shocked to hear I was practically retiring and coming back here." Because, of course, Hobbie figured they probably thought he was far too hung up on Wes' supposed death, because why else would he return to this planet?

"Otherwise...not too terribly, what with the government still ticking along and no complete catastrophes. Yet."

Date: 2009-08-23 10:16 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
Watching him for a moment, Wes considers his words. "You didn't have to do that on my account you know. I mean, the practically retiring thing."

From: [identity profile]
Hobbie flashed him what was a practically sunny smile, "I wasn't doing anyone any good back there." Well, maybe a little good. But not a lot of good. "Figured I'd better get out on a high note before the rookies start vaping me in the sims, you know?"

Or in real life. Whichever.

Date: 2009-08-24 04:43 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
Wes can't help but to smile back. After all, how often does anyone get to see that kind of a smile on Hobbie's face? "What about all those bacta endorsements?"

Date: 2009-08-24 04:54 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
"Well, a rich bacta-endorser like myself might want to just live out his retirement in seclusion. Keeps the hordes of screaming fans at bay, and all."

All three of them!

Date: 2009-08-24 05:32 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
"Well it doesn't get much more secluded than this place, so you've definitely picked the right spot."

Date: 2009-08-24 05:33 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
"That is pretty much what I figured." And he raises his new glass to Wes. Cheers!

Date: 2009-08-24 05:47 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
Wes chuckles softly as he raises his glass as well. "To seclusion, that's not quite as secluded as it used to be, or so it seems."

Date: 2009-08-25 01:18 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
"To seclusion. And good friends." Of whom the rumours of their death continually seem to be greatly exaggerated.

Date: 2009-08-25 03:05 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
Not always exaggerated, but at least for the moment, fixable.

"To good friends."

Date: 2009-08-26 02:49 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
With that, Hobbie nodded and took a long swallow of his drink, though not quite so emphatic as the one from earlier. There was still liquid left in his glass when he finished, after all.

"So what are you doing with yourself nowadays, anyway?"

Date: 2009-08-26 06:26 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
Wes did much the same thing, setting what was left of his drink on the table as he shrugged his shoulders a bit. "Aidan bought an old run down bar that me, him, and Frank are going to fix up and see if we can't give it a go. Mostly I think it's to give me and Frank something to do, but it might just work if we do it right. Otherwise, not much."

He paused for a moment before glancing back at Hobbie again. "We're also heading back home again in September for a while. I figure it's probably time I told some people I'm breathing again."

Wes is obviously not real thrilled with that idea, but he also knows it's time he did it just the same.

Hobbie blinked. "Well, at least Wedge and Tycho will think I'm less crazy then."

Less crazy. Not not crazy.

"And everybody needs a good bar."

From: [identity profile]
"Yeah. They'll just transfer their thoughts on who's crazy back over to me again. I'm sure it will be something of a relief to have that much back to normal at least."

Sure, he had been telling the people around here that he had already talked to Wedge and such about being alive again, but that didn't make it true.

Wes flashed a grin. "At least one."
