Well, he hadn't been declared a criminal yet, or at least no court martial seemed forthcoming. That was good. He'd even managed to find a job for a friend of his. That was better. He would have felt guilty, otherwise. She didn't know it was him, though. She still wasn't talking to him. He still couldn't blame her.

His best friend had gone off back to Terra and left a hole in-...and left Hobbie back on Coruscant. Well, not left him there so much as Hobbie had chosen to stay. It would be better, that way, he figured. Or something. It probably couldn't get worse. And that was saying something, from him.

Besides, he had something to take care of, that he'd been putting off for far too long. The war was over, after all, despite what those silly warlords with their self declared titles of "Grand Admiral" or whatnot seemed to think. He had his own peace to make.

Of course, even though he wasn't a criminal or in the pending doom of court martial, he'd still been grounded until further notice. Which meant absolutely no access to an X-wing or other military craft. Which meant for this he was going to have to take civilian transport.

That was kind of humiliating.

Not to mention slow. Just drag out the torture. he thought to himself as he stared out a viewport of the vessel he'd found passage on into the confusion of color and light that was hyperspace. If I was in my X-wing I'd be there by now. That was a lie. Well, mostly there by now. And yet, as much as he didn't want this to drag on and on, the closer they got, the more they wished they were still further away. It was too soon. Maybe he should just get on the next transport back to Coruscant and forget this crazy idea. Maybe...

Wait a minute. He was a Rogue, for crying out loud! He'd faced down worse odds than this! And it was unlikely he'd get shot at, probably. So he had that going for him and-... he was going to do it. He had to, before it was too late. Before something happened and-... and he wouldn't have the opportunity anymore.

So he sat and stared out the viewport. No one talked to him. He didn't mind.

When they reached the planet, he disembarked, military-issue travel bag slung over one shoulder. At the bottom of the ramp, he stepped to the side out of the way of other passengers, and just breathed in the air. Every planet smelled a little different. This one smelled of...home. The reaction surprised him, just a bit. If you had asked him, he would have called anywhere with the squadron home, not here. But there it was. He couldn't help it.

With a feeling something like a ton of snow and ice from Hoth had settled in his gut and a wampa or three had set up camp there and were rampaging around, Hobbie took his first step forward on the ground of Ralltiir. One step, then another, and another, and soon enough, he was following an old, familiar path through the city. A path that led him to an old, familiar door. He stopped outside of it and looked at it with the eyes of a grown man and not the child he'd been when last he'd seen it. A little more worn, but then the entire house looked that way, but otherwise just as he remembered.

He hesitated outside the door a little longer before raising his hand and pushing the call button to let those inside know there was something waiting outside. He didn't have to wait long. The door opened in a woosh and standing before him was an older woman. Her hair was thinner, streaked with gray, her face lined, and there were the beginnings of bit of a hunch in her back. She'd aged far more than he'd ever thought. But her eyes were the same. And as he was staring at her, she was staring right back at him.

For a long, long moment, their frozen tableau held, mother and son merely looking at each other, remembering. Finally, it was she who broke the wall of silence around and between them with one, incredulous word, "Derek?"

He was blinking swiftly, to hold back the tide of some emotion he'd repressed all these years that was threatening to overwhelm him. Still, he managed to nod, "hello again, mother." And there was perhaps a desperate thought in there mommy, did you miss me?
